Samsung get serious with digital imaging

Samsung finally gets serious with digital imaging business, by releasing some innovative products at an affordable price. Okay, I admit that I’m not keen on using “unproven” name in digital products. Yes, Samsung is a very big company and all, but digital camera? Come on..

However, that kind of opinion were a thing in the past. One of the big decisive factor is that Samsung is developing the sensor for Pentax DSLR camera. Of course, it’s still unknown how good it is but at least it’s a big step in the right direction.

Samsung GX-20

The flagship DSLR model, dubbed GX-20, is identical to Pentax K20D, except for the kit lens, interface, and the shape of the function buttons. Samsung uses the Schneider Kreuznach, while Pentax uses its own lens, albeit the specification is also the same. It will retail around US$1299 body only.

Canon Initial Cameras for 2008

Canon announced its lineup of digital cameras in 2008. Of course, since it’s pretty early in the year 2008, this is just the initial lineup. The four cameras are:
CANON Ixus 80 IS

* Digital IXUS 80 IS – a compact, curved design in four attractive colour variations (Classic Silver, Candy Pink, Chocolate, Caramel), 8.0 Megapixels, 3x zoom with optical Image Stabilizer and 2.5” high resolution PureColor LCD II
* PowerShot A590 IS – 8.0 Megapixels, 4x zoom with optical Image Stabilizer, new Easy mode and full Manual control, range of optional lens accessories, 2.5” LCD and optical viewfinder
* PowerShot A580 – 8.0 Megapixels, 4x zoom, 2.5” LCD and optical viewfinder, plus new Easy mode
* PowerShot A470 – 7.1 Megapixels, 3.4x zoom, 2.5” LCD and four colour variations (Red, Blue, Green, Silver)

It seems that Canon opens the year with the introduction of compact and style cameras. When I asked about the EOS-450D in Indonesia, the reply was next month (or next two months).

New long zoomer from Sony

This is just the release. I haven’t toyed around with it yet. The bold parts are the interesting and useful features. And the italic ones are the good for marketing kind of thing.

Sony H50

Meet Sony’s newest member from the high-zoom camera line, the 9.1-megapixel Cyber-shot® DSC-H50 digital camera. This new model utilizes a powerful Carl Zeiss® 15x optical zoom lens with Super SteadyShot® optical image stabilization to capture action at a distance. One of the main lens elements is manufactured from super low-dispersion glass, which helps it produce more exact point-to-point correspondence between an object and its image. The lens yields sharp, high-contrast images and reduces color fringing, even when shooting in telephoto ranges.

The camera also features a large, 3-inch tilting LCD screen so you can shoot comfortably from nearly any position, at low and high angles. Its scratch-resistant, UV hard-coat finish adds a premium look and feel that mirrors the performance of the model.

One Day with Sony Alpha 700

Sony Alpha 700Just before Christmas, I have the opportunity to toy with the new Sony Alpha 700. The Sony guys were kind enough to brought so many lenses, ranging from 17-85mm Carl Zeiss, 300mm Carl Zeiss, 85mm Sony, and many more. I think they brought almost a dozen lenses. There were 12 people that were invited to test the Alpha 700, divided into two groups. So everyone can pick their own lens and even switched it.

We went photo-huntingi n Puncak, near the tea plantation up on the slope. Appararently, Sony Indonesia had prepared the schedule and destination for our photo-hunt, Melrimba Garden. I never went there by myself actually, so it’s pretty exciting. Turned out that more…
