Canon Initial Cameras for 2008

Canon announced its lineup of digital cameras in 2008. Of course, since it’s pretty early in the year 2008, this is just the initial lineup. The four cameras are:
CANON Ixus 80 IS

* Digital IXUS 80 IS – a compact, curved design in four attractive colour variations (Classic Silver, Candy Pink, Chocolate, Caramel), 8.0 Megapixels, 3x zoom with optical Image Stabilizer and 2.5” high resolution PureColor LCD II
* PowerShot A590 IS – 8.0 Megapixels, 4x zoom with optical Image Stabilizer, new Easy mode and full Manual control, range of optional lens accessories, 2.5” LCD and optical viewfinder
* PowerShot A580 – 8.0 Megapixels, 4x zoom, 2.5” LCD and optical viewfinder, plus new Easy mode
* PowerShot A470 – 7.1 Megapixels, 3.4x zoom, 2.5” LCD and four colour variations (Red, Blue, Green, Silver)

It seems that Canon opens the year with the introduction of compact and style cameras. When I asked about the EOS-450D in Indonesia, the reply was next month (or next two months).

Just Press to Action

Expo TelevisionI can’t really imagine the hassle and the amount of effort needed to make a home movie before digital. With the current crop of newest camcorder, making your own movies is easier than ever. The choice is pretty much endless, even if you don’t have a big budget. You can choose from MiniDV, memory card-based, and hard drive based camcorder. You can also choose the designs, the colors, and the specifications, which are mind-boggling really.

Unfortunately, this kind of luxury leads to one problem. How can we choose the right camcorder for us? Sure, it’s not as complicated as choosing our spouse, but it’s getting close. To avoid that kind of complication, we can seek the advice of fellow users’ review from the site such as Expo TV. It’s not a dedicated camcorder review site, but think of it like YouTube for gadget reviews. You can even earn money by doing video reviews, but I’m not going to talk about it.

In the site, I found a product that I’ve never seen before; The Flip Video. From the design, it’s pretty neat and small. I couldn’t find it here in Indonesia, but since it’s pretty cheap, I think it will fit well into those who have very limited budget.

Of course you can also find reviews of the big brands such as JVC Everio GZ-HD3, Sony DCR-DVD205, Canon XH A1 (another product not found here), Panasonic Palmcorder PVGS12, and many more.

New Software for Sony GPS receivers

Starting last January, Sony will bundle new versions of Picture Motion Browser software and Image Tracker software with its GPS receiver for digital imaging products.

With this new software, the GPS-CS1KASP device can trace the GPS coordinates of your video footage to an online map, courtesy of Google™. The product will continue to support GPS tagging of digital still photos.

Benefits of the new GPS-CS1KASP device include:

• The GPS receiver records your location every 15 seconds so you can trace your course while recording video or pinpoint the loacation where you took a photo.

• The updated software pairs the GPS recordings with your video and still photos so you can trace your video, or plot your photo, to an online map, courtesy of the Google maps™ mapping service.

• The cylindrical 12-channel receiver is only 3.5-inches long and weights just two ounces.

• Compatible with virtually any digital camera or camcorder, the product is able to store 360 hours of coordinates on its internal memory.

Sony includes two new attachment accessories so you can secure to the GPS receiver to your arm when running or hiking or to your bike when cycling. The product continues to offer a carabiner to attach the receiver to a backpack or a belt loop.

The GPS-CS1KASP device will be available next month for about $150 at sonystyle.com, at Sony Style® retail stores (www.sonystyle.com/retail) , and at authorized dealers nationwide.

Writer’s note: We still have to see how good it will perform, however this shows that Sony is finally getting serious about GPS.
